It is October 1781 and the war for America's freedom has ended. Lives have been lost, lives have been changed, and lives have been destroyed. Joshua Merrick has lost everything and everyone he loves. The only thing left of his life before the war is half of a gold heart-shaped locket he wears that has the word forever engraved on it. Reverend Nate, a man who throughout his life has had his faith in God tested by tragedy and heartbreak, believes that God holds everything and everyone in His power and has a purpose and plan for every man. These two men are thrown together in postwar colonial Williamsburg, one trying to save the other and not succeeding. Then something strange and remarkable happens the night the Governor's Palace is destroyed by fire, causing Joshua to lose even more than he already has or could ever have imagined.
