The Bailey family moved from urban Quincy to a small country town, where Mrs. Bailey was to teach in the fall. Mr. Bailey’s tragic car accident turned their whole life topsy turvey, putting him in a wheelchair and uprooting both ten-year-old Josh and twelve-year-old Sarah.

Josh finds the friendship of two neighborhood boys and takes to the woods and streams for a fun summer of fishing and adventure. Sarah retreats to the loft of the old barn, where strange and wondrous events shape her summer.

Sarah watched her younger brother as he rode off. Why were little brothers such a pain? she wondered. It wasn’t that long ago that they had actually been friends. Shaking her head, Sarah climbed into the loft of the old barn. Slowly she crept to the far corner of the loft and moved a bale of hay. There behind the hay was a trap door. She pulled the trap door open.
