BJ Thompson, criminology professor at Fresno State University, accepts an invitation to join a colleague in the Art Department to spend two months with him in Hong Kong, he to conduct research in Chinese Art History and BJ to sharpen his sleuthing skills in attempting to locate a former sweetheart who had jilted him months earlier by joining a "partner in crime," Hong Tu Sun, on an adventure to Hong Kong to sell an Imperial jade sculpture. Complications develop when one of the pair is murdered, ostensibly by thugs attempting to secure the dragon, now worth millions of dollars. BJ and his friends get caught up in the murder ramifications and their own naiveté in the world of art collectors, auctions and sales. Along with that responsibility, BJ considers the wisdom of a rekindled romance with former sweetheart, Mao Merritt.
