Tunakumbuka (We Remember): Our Time in Tanzania as Peace Corps Volunteers
$16.95
This is the story of two recent college graduates from rural Iowa, Harlan and Kathy, who in 1965, shortly after getting married, joined the Peace Corps and spent two years as high school teachers in Tanzania, east Africa. Some of the events of those two years and the thoughts of Harlan and Kathy were recorded in fifty-five letters sent home to Harlan’s parents. Those fifty-five letters were kept, and forty years later were the source of material for this story. Life at the rather isolated boys boarding school is described, as well as travels around east Africa during the school breaks. This story was originally written as a gift for Harlan and Kathy’s children and grandchildren, in order to preserve the memories brought back by reading the forty-year-old letters in 2008.
