Riding alone across America was an intimate experience complete with sweating, spitting and cursing. It was days of sloppy rains and cold winds; days of blue skies, deserted highways, beer cans and bungee cords. Slipping away was just a bicycle ride from Seattle to Fort Myers, but when I flew out to Seattle to start this trip and saw America from 33,000 feet, I realized what a chore it would be.
