"Georgia native Shirley Tyler is a professional photographer and writer whose inspiration for Nite Nite Bedtime is her son James, whom she calls a “miracle child,” born in 1991.

She loved reading to James “from the time he was born until he was too old to be read to.” When James was two years old, his mother, a preacher's daughter, began a nightly routine in which she'd read a book to him, sing a song and say a prayer, enabling him to feel safe and sound when he drifted off to sleep.

Nite Nite Bedtime is just the first of what she plans will be a series of children's books based on stories she made up for James as he grew up in Georgia and Japan, where she moved in 1999 when her journalist husband, Greg, accepted a job with the military newspaper Stars and Stripes. She returned to the United States after the death of her husband in 2006."
