Product Description
Hal Sullivan's Aunt Jill dies, and Hal goes to the wake. He talks to Jill's son, Donald, who always thought he was the son of her second husband, Domiglio, who was killed in the war in Europe. Donald tells Hal a story his mother told him a few days before she died. Jill, Domiglio, and his friend, Harris, are at Fort Jackson, South Carolina, but Domiglio is sent to Italy. When they are alone, Harris and Jill have an affair. Then, Harris goes to England, then France. Domiglio is transferred to France, and rejoins Harris. Jill notifies Domiglio that she is pregnant, and he is overjoyed. Both men fight as infantrymen across Europe until they reach the ethereal, impenetrable Rimburg Castle on the Holland/Germany border. On the march, the memory of a traumatic event from his childhood flows from Harris's subconscious.
