In search of happiness, high school student Linda Hodges leaves an unhappy home life in California in l950 to live with a favorite aunt and her family on a small farm in Texas. Although shocked by the troubled conditions apparent in her aunt’s home, Linda continues on, seeking contentment with her dearly loved aunt. Despite her good intentions, Linda meets with one trial after another, including emotional and physical harassment from her teasing and flirtatious uncle. Is her uncle’s seemingly playful and teasing nature proof that he is the philanderer her aunt believes him to be? Or is her aunt being overly critical? Uncertain, Linda tries to find enjoyment in school friendships and activities, but the conflict between the adults becomes oppressive. Then a family tragedy occurs, leaving Linda devastated, lost and lonely. What can she do? How does she cope?
