When the skeletons of six humans were found among a shipment of buffalo bones originating from a bone yard in a small west Texas town,; the Texas Rangers,; led by Sergeant Tom Peak,; found that these human remains were the result of uncontrolled greed. After the killers were brought to justice,; the Rangers faced more serious challenges caused by a wealthy rancher who would do anything to add to his assets. Following the mass slaughter of the American bison,; the Great Plains became littered with the bones of millions of the shaggy beasts. Because of recent innovations,; bones became valuable. An industry was created that included collecting,; shipping and processing the bones. As the Great Plains were scoured clean,; bone pickers followed the last large Texas herd off of the Llano Escandado and into the unforgiving land in northern Tom Green County.
