When Bright Star crosses over from childhood into womanhood, she discovers she is able to walk in the spirit world while dreaming. Her clan recognizes this unique power by giving her the new name of Dreamwalker during the Women's Ceremony, but something goes terribly wrong and everyone fears it is a bad omen. Then she receives warnings from the spirit world that her people are in danger. As part of learning the Healing Ways to become the next medicine woman for her people, Dreamwalker goes on a vision quest. She returns to find most of the cliffdwelling clans slaughtered and many of the young women and children taken as slaves. It is up to her to save the cliffdwellers and bring them home.
