Children will fall in love with a lonely and very naïve, little caterpillar with big, adorable eyes and chubby freckled cheeks, who seems to be very bored with his “squirmy” little life…that is, until he encounters a miracle. “He smells the sweetest perfume that only Heaven makes…” This perfume comes from a beautiful, fragrant rose. Immediately, he begins dreaming and wishing that he, too, could be a flower “blessed by the smile of an angel…” He starts thinking about how to trick the garden angels into turning him into a flower so that he, too, can be beautiful.
This sweet, enchanting poem/story introduces children to two miracles of nature: The soft, heavenly aroma of a beautiful yellow rosebud (“When an angel smiles, a flower blooms”) and, of course, the ultimate miracle of metamorphosis, when all the flowers become his to enjoy.
