“I was told reinforcements were being sent!” Ramsel yelled, looking at the older dragoon.
“And this is it,” the man replied. Ramsel reviewed the short line of men.
“If you men would excuse us?” Ramsel asked, his anger fading from his voice.
“Sir,” they said in unison as they stepped from the building.
“I’m sorry about that, Jackson, but they aren’t going to help,” Ramsel began.
“I’m well aware of that. But Ryan insisted on sending just the twenty,” Jackson replied.
“Why didn’t he send him?” Ramsel asked. “I would feel much more comfortable if he had come along.”
“Maybe he didn’t want his son in danger,” Jackson answered.
“If he didn’t want him in danger, he wouldn’t have let him become a dragoon,” Ramsel retorted.
“Perhaps it’s that Ryan knows that none of us are coming back this time.”
Jackson chuckled.
“No, it’s something more,” Ramsel said.
