The sounds in the early morning, just before the new light of day was about to ease upon them, woke Tulock and Kayala. The sound was unusual, deep throated; the roar still rang through the air, vibrating with authority and fierceness. Birds flew from the tree tops as the earth-shattering sound pierced the early morning air. Immediately, the senses of both were alerted to a powerful, maybe even deadly, presence. Listening for the faintest sounds, trying to determine if what had made the sound was close to where they were.
