Aliens have been abducting earthlings for 1,000 years. Chip Rose is the latest earthling taken. He awakens on the planet Arret and discovers he has a female spirit residing in his mind. His mind-meld discovers she can manipulate certain tendrils in his mind, enhancing his strength, speed, eyesight, and hearing, which Chip hopes will increase his survival rate more than 24 hours.

The insidious aliens prompt the earthlings to search for a scout ship somewhere on the surface by inserting a subliminal message into their brain. On a hidden starship, the holographic ABBI discovers she has miraculously become a human female. The computer considers her a nuisance and probable high-maintenance and locks her inside the massive Arboretum located on the port side of the ship. Back on Arret, Chip’s mind-meld discovers the device the Watcher inserted into his brain and causes it to malfunction with surprising consequences for Chip and the Watcher.
