“What would you know about losing a father? You’ve still got yours and those four little beggars you call brothers. Which reminds me, when will they be coming for their next handout?”

“They’re not handouts, and my brothers are not beggars. My brothers work for every penny I give them. If that Tom you hired would do his work my brothers wouldn’t have to. I’d say Tom is the beggar.”

“I see you still haven’t learned not to sass me. I’m just going to have to give you another lesson.” He came to my bedside unbuckling his belt. I knew what was coming but could do nothing to stop him. I lay there sobbing as he forced himself on me. Suddenly he was thrust away from me by some unknown force and hit the wall opposite the bed. I saw fear in his eyes as he ran from the room. I do not know what put that fear there but I am grateful. Silas never came to my room again.
