This is a continuation from Dwellers In The Dust. The story continues with Kevin Colbey, a veterinarian, and his 8 mother- less children, along with Jo Eben, his housekeeper. Mrs. Schaeffer, Kevin’s mother-in-law, is also a contributing figure in this story. She has a strong dislike for Jo. Kevin has proposed to Jo but has not mentioned a thing about the fact that they are to be married, since his proposal. Jo begins to wonder if there is going to be a wedding. The children keep Jo hopping during the summer school vacation with their little capers. Kevin with his Irish/Norwegian temperament and Jo with her full blooded German ancestry, keep things livened up. Because Kevin has a hard time expressing his feelings, this leaves Jo wondering what he really perceives about her.
