“You’re going home soldier,” the nurse said. I smirked at the statement. I had been transferred to the military hospital in Iraq two weeks prior. Every moment of the day I dreamed about returning home. But now I regretted the day had arrived. “I bet you’re happy to be returning to the States,” she said as she packed the remainder of my personal items into a duffel bag. My hands clenched the arms of the wheelchair and rage consumed me as I yelled, “…every man wants to return to his wife half a man.” The nurse stepped back and hesitated before replying, “If your wife truly loves you, she’s not going to care how you come home, just as long as you come home. I’ve seen men and women return to their loved ones in body bags. Count yourself lucky you are returning alive.”
