A secluded area, called Highbridge, is the meeting place of an adulterous affair between a married doctoral student, Rob Branigan and a lab assistant, Erin O'Shea. Although the starry-eyed lovers profess their love, they are forced to go their separate ways. After taking a teaching position in Virginia, Rob's wife dies and leaves him to raise their son alone. The arrival of a new teacher who becomes a friend makes life bearable for Rob, but an "incident" uncovers a repulsive trait of the new instructor.
