Set during the mid-1960s through the early 1980s, Kara, a girl of multi-racial background, has taken on the task of caring for her family despite her tender years. Kara struggles to survive in a household governed by a violent, physically abusive, domineering mother with an interest in the occult and a chronic alcoholic and self-loathing father. The inner turmoil of Momma’s house is in sharp contrast to the outer appearance of the family’s seemingly picturesque life.

Kara must contend with the horrors of molestation, rape and being sold. Bound and determined to “bend but NEVER break,” she carries herself with a resolve that belies her years. Kara finds her strength through an innate sense of self, faith, and a passion she discovers out of necessity—cooking!
