After learning sign language during high school, Nena Stoddard moved to Washington, D.C. to further her study at Gallaudet University, where she attended the Interpreters in Training program. After completion of the program, Ms. Stoddard moved back home to open her own interpreting agency. While teaching a sign class, Ms. Stoddard met her husband, and they began trying for a family soon after they were married. After five grueling years, during which they were told that they would not have children, a son was born—two months premature and DEAF!
