"Prior to the war between the states, many families were migrating from Virginia and North Carolina to what is now known as West Virginia. Many of these families had heard of government land that was available to stake a claim and declare ownership. They headed north with their families and staked a claim for several hundred acres of this land. They were later told their claim was not recognized. During the next 25 years, there were four unsolved murders and a United States Marshall barely escaped a lynching. After several years of extensive research from court house record and talking to people who heard their parents tell the story, I will attempt to tell both sides as it was told to me.
