Seventeen-year-old Hannah Winstead finds that her serene existence in Pinley House near London is about to come to an unwelcome end. Her guardians inform her that Lord Earling has requested her hand in marriage, and they have consented.

Hannah runs away, seeking work as a governess in London. Good fortune smiles on her when she is aided by handsome Captain Aaron Clarke. He takes her aboard his ship bound for the village of Mistral on the coast of New England and employs her as governess to his wards.
