Dutchman Fire is a story of a conflagration fire and the people who fought it. The fire, started by a lightning storm, fueled by heavy stands of dry timber and driven by storm winds, spread repeatedly for seven days, consuming thousands of acres in the process.

Each day brought frustration and failure to those fighting the fire, with only limited successes. The blaze was finally cornered by the Fire Control Team and over six hundred firefighters from across the country. Life in the fire camp and on the fire line provided many distractions to the daily struggle.

Bill Jackson, ranger of the district where the fire was burning, watches with increasing dismay and little influence as an out-of-state team squanders resources while failing to control the fire. When a tragedy on the fire line causes the death of a key team member, Ranger Jackson is selected to replace the deceased and is given his chance to direct the control of the fire. Whether he succeeds or not is left to the discretion of the reader.
