Jess and Bob find what they think is a meteorite on the island where they live. The children soon discover that this is no ordinary meteorite. It’s an egg, and when it hatches it produces unusual and highly intelligent spiders that grow at an alarming rate. After observing the spiders for several days, the children become frightened, so they enlist the aid of Bob's eccentric friend, Professor Ipswich. The Professor investigates, then devises a brilliant plan to eliminate the spiders. Together, Jess, Bob, and the Professor rid the island of the weird insects. However, a new twist develops when a note attached to a balloon-like device drops on the same spot where the meteorite landed. The note reveals that the spiders were sent to Earth for a special purpose. Jess, Bob, and the Professor are now plunged into a terrifying situation that could result in the destruction of the whole world.
