Shirley Hill Morris was born in 1937 in Trenton, Alabama. Morris was raised a farmer’s daughter, the seventh of eight children. When she wasn’t working in the fields, Morris entertained herself by reading, writing, sewing or playing the piano. After finishing high school, Morris moved to Illinois to seek work. In the late 1960s, she returned to Alabama with her husband and three sons. She attended nursing school and worked for twenty years in the nursing field. Much of the inspiration for her poetry comes from her career. Morris has an unquenchable thirst for knowledge. Above all, Shirley Hill Morris cares deeply for people.
