The “woman” in the “Habit” becomes enamoured -- and impregnated -- by a conscienceless doctor on staff. Her lost vocation and “wallet-size remembrance of motherhood” drives her through a tormented odyssey blaming and denying God. Although uncommon--demoniac possession does happen--she becomes a victim. Strangely, through this unusual ordeal the doctor expiates his guilt, and Jeanell gains redemption.
