Inquiring individuals approached Jesus asking, “Master, if one were incapable of keeping all of the law, if it were deemed impossible to observe all of the multitudinous commandments and ritual convention—if forced to make a choice and if able to keep only one—what should it be? What is the greatest commandment of all?”

Without hesitation Jesus responded that they should commit themselves to God, with all of their passion! He left no quarter for confusion or uncertainty. Yet He continued with His elucidation that the second greatest commandment is like unto it—and that commandment is directed toward mankind.

It is an absolute must that our service to God incorporates an equally essential relationship of service to mankind, to our brothers in the Lord as well as to those on the outside of the Body of Christ. This horizontal relationship must be considered in answering the all important question of what is the most important commandment.
