Champion carriage driver Eric Magee arrives at the World Four-in-Hand Championship with great hope. Two muggers attack him in a secluded breezeway and smash his hands. A reluctant rules committee will let him sit on the box and direct his team if the driver is his wife. His sweetheart, Calder Aimes, who competes successfully with her single horse has little experience driving the team. Eric has three weeks to teach her. On her first drive with Squirrel practicing for a local event, Calder discovers a bay team entangled in harness. When she frees the last horse and pulls him away from a precipice, she discovers the body of last year’s world champion driver, Hungarian Mirac. Later local police enlist Eric to help solve an insurance fraud involving a rival driver, while Calder fears the stalker whose cigarette glows from across the car park.
