For years, silence was the only thing I knew. Bruises, scrapes and emotional tears were middle-class secrets too painful to share. Through Sociology, as a personal philosophy and natural way of life, I was shown the light to healing. It was through my first Introduction to Sociology class that my interpretation of safety changed from a fantasy...to a reality.

Learning to live one day at a time is still a struggle. There aren't enough games of star power, criminal constructions, songs, or book discussions to give me back seven years...but such intellectual kindness is plenty to give me happiness I never knew existed.
