Born in 1973 and raised in Newark, New Jersey, Jamaris was bound to relive the life of domestic violence, drugs, alcohol and pain she witnessed as a youth. At the age of sixteen, she was crushed by the loss of the only love she knew, her mother. Holding fast to the power of that love, she would often hear two simple words of advice that her mother gave her: “Seek God.” Though she was frequently overwhelmed by the darkness that surrounded her, Jamaris knew there had to be something more, something better. She chose to break the chains of her past. As she stepped out in faith, she began her trek to seek God. Poetic expression became a vehicle that Jamaris utilized to share these feelings and emotions.
