The Inheritance is about two women born a generation apart, one in the South in 1889 and the other in the Northeast in 1937. They speak contrapuntally about how if feels to be a woman: their frustrations with God, limitations placed on them because of their gender, sexual confusion and lack of boundaries, sexual abuse, thwarted professional ambitions, marriage, birthing, wifely duties, the death of a parent or spouse, growing old, dying, exploring the Other Side, the life-review, and healing. The two woman tell their stories not just to learn about each other, but to learn about themselves.
