The Drifter, now a young man, was orphaned at ten when a fire took his family, and has spent most of his life looking for a place to belong. His travels take him into Mexico, Texas, on into New Mexico, through the Great Plains, and beyond. Each chapter is filled with the hardships felt by many during the late 1860’s at the beginning of a period of tremendous growth in America, and as seen in the coming of the railroad to the Old West. The Drifter, Ellie, a twelve-year-old girl, and Lonesome Billy Bob, a young man with a harmonica and an incredible talent for music, form an unlikely trio that share triumphs and sorrow. They soon learn that life’s well-traveled road can turn very quickly. Yet the strength of their character carries them to their journey’s end.
