John Breckenridge is a young man from a poor Appalachian family. Stricken with a fatal virus and unable to pay for treatment, John gives up hope and his belief in God. When a healing spring is discovered in Yellowstone National Park, his desperate parents send him across the country for a miracle.

Through a series of both preposterous misfortunes and incredible blessings on the road, John begins to regain his faith. Along the way, he encounters a mysterious, purple scarf-clad young woman named Aida, who lovingly helps him overcome his doubts and lead a life that changes the world.
