Billy’s Most Difficult Choice shows how Billy, the main character, responds with grief after learning that his parents are divorcing. He is instructed by his parents that he must choose which parent he will live with after the divorce. As Billy progresses through each stage of grief, as depicted by John Bowlby’s phases of grief and mourning, he encounters an important person in his life. Each of these characters represents a similar stage in Lawrence Kohlberg’s theory of moral development as they help Billy grow through his stages of grief.
