Clemente’s Dream is the story of a nine-year-old boy who moves to an Alabama town with his widowed mother when their car breaks down en route to Florida. Finding difficulty with a new school and with meeting new people, Clemente Vazquez soon becomes the target of suspicion when one of the town’s leading merchants discovers his “prized possession” missing. Facing further adversity such as hearing disparaging remarks about his Puerto Rican heritage from the school bully and from other local residents, Clemente battles a number of obstacles, hoping to become accepted by the town.

Throughout his short life, Clemente has wanted to become a big league baseball player (his father was a college star and desired for his son to excel in the sport, as well). Wanting to live out his dad’s dream, Clemente looks to the stars each night hoping that his wish will come true.
