A family shivers as they gather sticks to burn in their wood-burning stove for warmth. The firewood that was donated to them earlier this winter is all gone. There is never enough water to supply their needs for cooking, bathing, and cleaning. Buying food at a grocery store is only a dream. Food is obtained through the many charities that service their area. Even though schooling is free, school supplies are not. It is either an extreme hardship or a complete impossibility to buy school supplies. Shopping for clothing or anything else for that matter is cost prohibitive. Clothes and household items must also be donated by charitable organizations. This is not a description of some third world country. This is the United States and this is one Central Illinois family’s story.
