I joined the Navy in 1976. My boot camp company commander, Sonar Technician First Class Neal, told us repeatedly to “touch the sky.” By that, he explained, he was talking about obtaining all you could out of any endeavor you undertook. He made us promise to always attempt, at least, “to touch the sky.” I have had only four periods of writing in my life:
