Four Legionnaires, drunk with wine, are caught by fellow soldiers in a nobleman?s house and sentenced to become assassins or die immediately. One of the prisoners asks, as they are led from Pilot?s presence, ?But who are we to kill??

The men shrugged. They had killed many men before. This would be no different.

But one of the four, Augustus, is drawn strangely and unwillingly into the rabbi?s orbit. He begins to doubt, after months of broken and frustrated plans and near misses, that what he?s supposed to do is wrong.

Moving through ?the land of milk and honey,? Augustus discovers a love of the land, the people, and the rabbi, and develops a simple wish to grow old in the olive gardens and vineyards and sunshine. But Augustus must choose a side. Ironically, it will be Jesus himself who forces Augustus into action.
