The story takes place in Carmel Valley Village, just inland from Carmel-by-the-Sea in California. Rebecca and her mom moved to Laguna Robles, where they lived on a beautiful lake. She and the children, that lived in the other 17 homes, liked to explore all five of the lakes.

Max was born the year they moved and the story continues for seven years.
