A young Ohio man is swept up in the fury of the Civil War. After losing his brother and witnessing the carnage at Shiloh, he deserts the Union Army. William becomes a man on the run. Arriving in Missouri, he runs into a young school teacher he had met in Ohio. The teacher, William Quantrill, offers William a chance to survive the war. Joining Quantrill’s Raiders gives him protection and a comradeship he had never known. His new friends include Cole Younger, and Jesse and Frank James.
William was a real person living in a dark period of American history. He was the great, great-uncle of the author. Through family stories, historical facts, and years of research, William’s story can be told. History is written by the victors. This is history from the losers’ point of view.
