This book is an allegory. It presents an extended metaphor comparing nations and their actions over a one-hundred-year period (1905-2004) to students in a high school and their actions over a ten-day period. Wars become fights, allies become friends, empires become bullies, and national unions become couples. However, the childish and petty nature of decision-making stays the same.

Love the students as they stand up for the weak, begin dating others, and seek unique solutions to their problems; hate them when they bully others, conspire, and turn their backs on their friends. And forgive them when they begin to put aside their petty differences and try to make their school a more tranquil place. It is this message of hope that emerges in the end that makes it clear that we are now maturing as a species, even if we still have a long way to go.
