It was not quite winter yet to Alexander Robinson, Che Che Pin Qua to his Indian relatives, and it was bone-numbing cold. He was in the front of a birch bark canoe headed north and east. They had started at Mackinaw, Michigan, and headed out across Lake Huron. For safety they stayed within eyesight of the shore at all times. Their trip was now a steady routine that seemed to go on forever. His mentor Jac, the man in the back of the canoe, had told him they would eventually travel as far as forty miles a day. Now they were lucky if they made twelve miles a day. Nothing but experience equips a person for this kind of effort. It was 1776, he was ten, and this trip was his Indian mother's idea. It was his first venture into a lifetime career in the fur trade.
