Monica, a young poet, is in love with Dante, a married man, but loses her ability to speak, just as her poetry is gaining recognition. After a harbor cruise and luncheon set up for employees of Huntingcore, a mining equipment company in Milwaukee, Monica and her coworker Julie, escape a fire that destroys four city blocks of downtown Milwaukee, while Dante, who missed the cruise by getting on the car ferry to Ludington, Michigan, arrives back to learn of the tragedy and begin his search for the missing.
