The author has been an environmental writer and has moved fifty-two times. She lived in Europe and Mexico as an expatriate, housed with the people who lived there, used public transportation, bought produce from farmers, worked with American volunteer groups, and always became a part of the local culture.

Personal lifetime experiences with downsizing and relocating members of her family, and interviewing many people who have experienced the frustration of dealing with family or friends who will not face the difficult decision of changing, have influenced, designed and created this guide.

She lives with her family on Hawks Prairie in Western Washington State.
