When the time came to explain to my grandson, Andy, how and why he came to be adopted by us, I searched for a children’s story book that might help me and found none. It hit me, like a bolt of lightning that I had the knowledge and ability to produce just such a book. I pondered how I should approach the book or even begin. I wrote and illustrated his story, using a completely positive approach since this was the way he would find out for the first time about how he came to be with us. We knew pain would be dealt with in the future, but for the first time he heard “adopted,” we wanted it to be special, positive and wonderful. And it was. He is ten years old now, and he reads “Andy’s Story” to me every so often.
