The story opens with the Little Tree realizing how lonely she is. It takes her through a year of observing what seems to be a better life for the other trees.

A catastrophic event changes her life and her loneliness is then magnified. She even reaches moments of despair. After a while, hope does spring forth. She realizes that she is not so alone after all.

This story is meant to teach children that others have feelings and that loyalty and treating others well is the right way to behave. Also, as bad as things might seem, they will get better. The value of friendship is also shown.
