Rhea and her friend Mira lived a long time ago in one of the great forests covering the Earth. Their homes were fashioned out of tree trunks, found in the Middle World, a place between the Lower and Upper Worlds. The girls visited often, since their homes were close. They often took trips by traveling along specially constructed pathways with protective handrails, made from strong branches, and thick vines. Only during daylight would they travel because at night the forest became a dark land.

One day Rhea's father told them about a mysterious place; the far-away Mountain. Planning a picnic at the edge of the forest, in order to see the Mountain, both girls stayed too long.

How they got home in spite of the darkness; and what happened afterwards tells a story of many adventures, ending with a visit to the Lair of the Dragon.
